Crown Casino Faces Scrutiny After Security Officer Alleges Assault by James Packer

A security officer employed at Melbourne’s premier Crown Casino has accused wealthy businessman James Packer of physical harm. The officer has initiated legal action against his immediate employer, MSS Security, in addition to Packer and Crown Resorts.

As per court filings with the Victorian Supreme Court, the officer, Iskandar Chaban, asserts that Packer was inebriated when he attacked him on January 1, 2016. Chaban alleges Packer verbally harassed and intimidated him, and then suddenly moved towards him, shoving him in the chest.

This legal proceeding follows closely behind another case filed earlier this week by Jenny Jiang, a former Crown worker, who claims the company caused her harm and damages.

These occurrences have led the Victorian government to declare an expedited evaluation of Crown Melbourne’s casino permit, subsequent to an investigation by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) in New South Wales that revealed proof of illicit financial activities.

The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) is mandated to assess Crown’s license every five years, with the previous assessment conducted in 2018. However, due to the recent series of disputes, the upcoming assessment will be expedited.

“We are ensuring Crown Melbourne is functioning in a clear and suitable fashion,” stated Melissa Horne, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation.

The New South Wales inquiry revealed troubling findings about Crown, necessitating a thorough examination of their activities in Victoria. This review aims to determine if Crown Melbourne remains fit to retain its Victorian gaming license while awaiting the final judgment. Crown has demonstrated transparency in addressing the concerns highlighted by the New South Wales Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) inquiry. They have collaborated closely with the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VCGLR) to elucidate their proposed changes and have pledged full cooperation with this Victorian assessment.
