Ontario Horse Racing Authority Issues Suspension Over Horse Mistreatment Allegations

author By Olivia "Clover" Davis Jun11,2024

The Ontario Horse Racing Authority imposed a twenty-four-month suspension on equine handler Anthony Beaton due to grave apprehensions regarding his management of horses under his supervision. The inquiry commenced in October 2023 after officials were made aware of the unsatisfactory state of a young horse in Beaton’s care. Beaton is prohibited from involvement in racing activities until October 2025. The director of the Ontario Horse Racing Authority, Carlene Scharf, stressed that equestrian competition depends on the utmost level of care for the animals and that any individual discovered to be mistreating horses will face consequences. Beaton retains the option to contest the suspension. The allegations against Beaton assert that he breached regulations concerning conduct harmful to the best interests of racing and regulations forbidding the mistreatment or disregard of horses.

A juvenile equine, scarcely a year old, endured a savage beating from its handler. This surpassed mere strict discipline; the handler went to extremes, inflicting numerous strikes on the helpless creature and leaving it harmed. Such flagrant disregard for the welfare of an equine, particularly one so immature, is abhorrent and a grave violation of animal protection protocols.

This occurrence should be a clarion call. The Ontario Racing Commission, tasked with supervising horse racing in the region, recently took stern action against PointsBet Canada, a wagering enterprise. They received a substantial $150,000 penalty for multiple transgressions. While the precise nature of their offenses remains obscure, it underscores a requirement for more stringent supervision and responsibility within the horse racing sector.
