Australia Bans Online Poker But Considers Future Regulation

Australia has outlawed internet poker, leading to conjecture regarding its regulatory goals.

Playing poker on the internet is now prohibited in Australia following the Australian government’s implementation of the Interactive Gambling Amendment on Wednesday.

Despite this action, Australian government representatives have stated that they are exploring the possibility of regulating the online poker industry and establishing a comprehensive system for licensing.

On Tuesday, Australian Senator and prominent online poker proponent David Leyonhjelm revealed that “he had received correspondence from Communications Minister Mitch Fifield informing him that he had directed his department to conduct preliminary research into the viability of granting licenses to online poker providers to operate within Australia.”

The primary aim of the Interactive Gambling Act was to prevent unlicensed sports wagering companies from targeting Australian consumers, mandating that any entity accepting bets from Australia must possess an Australian license.

Nevertheless, this measure unintentionally resulted in the effective prohibition of online poker. Despite the concerted efforts of Leyonhjelm and the Australian Online Poker Alliance to secure an exemption for online poker from the impending legislation, their endeavors were disregarded.

Consequently, numerous online poker platforms, including PokerStars and 888, were compelled to discontinue providing their services to Australian players.

Senator Yalm continues to advocate for the creation of a fresh gaming oversight entity in Australia, drawing inspiration from the UK Gambling Commission, even with recent obstacles. He stressed that Australian internet poker enthusiasts are entitled to a secure and controlled space to partake in their pastime without being compelled overseas, and he’s resolute in realizing this vision.
